raw & natural

my friend jose juarez's final project for a class. the assignment was titled "raw & natural" and half the class photographed rocks and plants. no joke. but jose's creative mind is exceptional. from the lighting, to the intentionality of the objects placed, i'm in love with the ingenuity of this project. thought i'd share some of my favorite shots... enjoy.

claudio continues

taken with 35mm film, the lighting & warm coloring in these photos are exuberant. what i find the most eye-pleasing is the consistency in shapes, how interesting it is that the silouette of the boys face seems to duplicate the birds in the frame above him. there's something calming about these shots, something serene & peaceful captured on a tiny roll of film.

stay tight.

hats off to the horse

it's no secret how against sweatshops i am. i've written enough anti-forever21 articles, pro-american apparel articles, and own enough vintage to last me a lifetime. here's yet another group of people who are working towards a sweatshop free world. their business also encourages & provides oppertunity for amature graphic designers and artist alike. my hats off to the Don't Sweat Shop, running a really sweet business that i hope will catch on & be duplicated around the county. read on...

"The Don’t Sweat Shop is an ongoing project initiated and managed by Ambiguous Horse. The purpose of the Don’t Sweat Shop is to provide a space where people can create their own designs and have them screen-printed onto T-shirts or other items on the spot. The Don’t Sweat Shop also aims to educate people about sustainable manufacturing and the social, environmental and ethical implications of their everyday actions as consumers..."

For those of you who have never heard of Ambiguous Horse, "Ambiguous Horse helps creative people be productive and productive people be creative," check out their website as well, here.

also here are some shots taken at Midmouse '09, accessories provided by Ambiguous Horse, as well as a photo from their shop at Life in Style July '09, a gigantic buying frenzy for retail boutiques all over...

spring forward

spring is right around the corner. here's shots of my friend kelly, already embracing this spring's trends & colors as the weather down in southern california is starting to heat up. this unexpected combination of a summer dress paired with brown tights and boots is the perfect transititional outfit between winter and spring. isn't she lovely?

pharaoh pharaoh, oh baby let my people go

if pharaoh's daughter only knew her attire of slavery would be the garments of free women in generations following... i wonder if she enjoyed her clothes as much as we do. i love how creatively these costumey styles are brought into our wardrobes. these pictures make me think of an egyptian princess on haight street... beautiful, intricate, exquisite, & raw. tones of ancient culture and royalty worn on a sleeve.

my new obsession

i'm one of the many dissapointed folk who practically cried when polaroid shut down. nowadays plenty of other major film names are coming out with instant film alternatives, including fugi's instant diana, holgaroid instant film back, and many other fun new gadgets. however all these new cameras provide clear, quality instant photos. the beauty of the polaroid was it's old film, the more expired the film the better. the graininess, the distorted colors, the unique square shape of the photo, no new film can come close. even these new websites and computer programs that generate fake polaroid templates fall short of the greatness of the vintage polaroid photograph. recently camera companies have been manufacturing new cameras with filters that give off the old film look (ironic?). still, these cameras are severely overpriced, and who knows how long they'll last.

my new obsession has become the underrated, forgotten underdog, the disposable. a pack of 2 for $6.99, 1 hr photo, and presto, an entire roll of color-distorted, grainy, red film-lined photos. they're fun, they're cheap, and if you break it or lose it, you haven't lost much. don't get me wrong, i love my Nikon SLR, but there's something beautiful about a raw, uneditted photo from a disposable camera. "if you have to overedit, it's not a good photo!"

disposables are my new polaroid. grainy film and red lines for all!
